How Do You Choose The Right Brick Trowel For Bricklaying?

Picking a trowel isn't random-you gotta match it to you and what you're building. Let's break it down, no jargon.

First, size. Small project (mailbox, planter)? 9-10 inches. I used a 9.5-inch for my mailbox-no wasted mortar, no sore wrist. Big project (wall, patio)? 11-12 inches. Pros love these-lay 5-6 bricks per scoop. But test it first: hold a loaded 11-inch for 30 seconds. If your arm shakes, go smaller.

Blade material: Carbon steel's for pros-sharp, flexible, but rusts if you leave it wet. I have one-5 years old, but I wipe it down every time. Stainless steel? Better for beginners. No rust-leave it in a damp toolbox, no problem. Stiffer, but easier to care for. I recommend this if you're forgetful about cleanup (guilty!).

Handle: Wood's classic, but splinters if wet. I had one that gave me a tiny splinter-annoying. Rubber/foam? Game-changer. Grips when sweaty, absorbs vibration. I switched to foam-lay bricks for hours, no cramping. Plastic? Cheap, but slippery and cracks fast. Skip it.

Finally, hold it. It should feel balanced-no top-heavy blade. Hold for 2 minutes. If it's awkward then, imagine 2 hours. The right trowel feels like an extension of your hand. Test a few-hardware stores let you.
