How Do You Clean A Brick Trowel?

Cleaning a brick trowel is like washing a cast-iron skillet-ignore it, and you'll end up with a crusty mess that's hard to fix. The golden rule? Clean it right after use, before the mortar dries. Mortar is like cement glue; once it hardens, it'll cling to the blade like a barnacle, and prying it off will scratch the metal or dull the edge.

Start by scraping off excess mortar with a stiff brush or a putty knife. Think of it as brushing crumbs off a table before wiping-get rid of the big stuff first. Then, soak the trowel in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes. The soap breaks down the mortar's stickiness, and the warm water softens any stubborn bits, making them easy to wipe away. It's like soaking a dirty dish to loosen baked-on food-less scrubbing, more results.

After soaking, grab a wire brush (the kind with stiff bristles) and scrub the blade, paying extra attention to the corners and the handle joint, where mortar loves to hide. Scrub in the direction of the blade's edge to avoid dulling it-think of it as petting a cat, not rubbing against the grain. Rinse it off with clean water, then dry it thoroughly with a rag. Moisture is the enemy here; even a little water left on the metal can lead to rust, which turns your trusty trowel into a flaky, ineffective mess.

For extra protection, wipe the blade with a light coat of oil (vegetable oil works fine) after drying. It's like giving the trowel a protective shield, keeping rust at bay and making future cleanups easier. Store it in a dry place, and your trowel will stay sharp, smooth, and ready to lay mortar for years. A clean trowel isn't just about looks-it's about performance. A gunk-free blade spreads mortar evenly, making your brickwork neater and your job easier.
