Good question - because honestly, it depends more on you than the tool. A quality grout spreader can last anywhere from a few months to several years, depending on how often you use it and how well you take care of it.
If you're a casual DIYer, doing a kitchen backsplash or bathroom update once in a while, a decent rubber grout spreader could easily last you a few years. Just rinse it thoroughly after every use, and it'll stay in great shape.
For professionals or frequent users, the lifespan is shorter simply because of the workload. Constant pressure, grout abrasion, and frequent cleaning wear down the edges over time - usually after 3–6 months of regular use.
The real giveaway that it's time to replace it? When the edges start nicking or losing shape. Once the edge is uneven, you'll notice streaks or small gaps in your grout lines - that's your sign it's retiring time.
Plastic spreaders, of course, don't last nearly as long. The edge can chip or warp after just one big job, especially if you're applying pressure on floor tiles. Rubber ones are way tougher.
Cleaning also plays a big role. If you let grout dry on the tool even once, it's game over - it hardens like cement and ruins the surface. Keep it clean, and your spreader will keep working like new.
So there's no magic number, but here's the rule: take care of it, and it'll take care of you. Ignore it, and you'll be shopping for a new one before your next project even starts.
