How To Open Paint Can With Multitool?

Opening a paint can with a multitool (like an oscillating multi-tool) is surprisingly easy-no more wrestling with a lid that's been painted shut or a screwdriver that slips and splatters paint everywhere. Here's how to do it like a pro.

First, make sure your multi-tool is fitted with a scraper blade or a flathead screwdriver attachment-these work best for prying. If the can has a thin metal lid (most do), start by positioning the blade at the edge of the lid, where it meets the can's rim. Apply gentle pressure to wedge the blade between the lid and the can-you'll hear a satisfying "pop" as it breaks the seal.

Once you've got a small gap, slowly rotate the can while keeping the blade in place, letting the tool do the work. The oscillating motion (if your multi-tool is powered) will help the blade glide around the rim, loosening the lid bit by bit. If you're using a manual multi-tool (no power), just rock the blade back and forth slightly as you rotate, applying steady but light pressure-yanking too hard can bend the lid or cause paint to slosh out.

After a full rotation, the lid should lift off easily. Pro tip: Wipe any excess paint from the rim with a rag before replacing the lid later-this prevents it from sealing shut again. With a multi-tool, opening a paint can goes from a frustrating chore to a 30-second task, leaving you more time to focus on the fun part: painting.
