How To Tell Trowel Size?

Ever picked up a trowel and wondered, "Is this 6mm or 8mm?" I used to guess, but that led to lopsided tiles and wasted adhesive. Now I know a few tricks to tell trowel size at a glance-let me share them.

First, check the blade. Most trowels have their size stamped or printed on the metal blade, near the handle. It might say "6mm" or "1/4in" (for imperial sizes). Mine has "8mm" etched in tiny letters-I just needed to wipe off the grime to see it.

If there's no stamp, measure the notches. The size refers to the height of the notches, not the blade length. Grab a ruler and measure from the base of a notch to its tip. A 6mm trowel will have notches 6mm tall, an 8mm trowel 8mm, etc. It's like measuring the teeth on a comb-simple once you know where to look.

Blade length can hint at size too. Small trowels (3mm-6mm) are often shorter (6-8 inches), while larger ones (10mm+) are longer (10-12 inches). It's not a hard rule, but it's a quick way to guess if you're in a hurry.

Notch shape can also clue you in. V-notches are usually smaller (3mm-6mm), used for tiny tiles. Square notches come in all sizes but are most common in 6mm-12mm.

If all else fails, test it. Spread some adhesive on a piece of cardboard, then press a tile into it. Peel it up-small notches (3mm-6mm) will leave 1-3mm of glue on the tile, while larger ones (8mm+) leave 4mm+.
