How To Use A Square Notched Trowel?

Using a square notched trowel is like painting with a very specific brush-messy at first, but satisfying once you get the rhythm. I fumbled through my first attempt, leaving adhesive blobs that looked like a toddler's art project. Now? It's second nature, thanks to a few tricks.

Start with a clean surface-sweep away dust like you're shooing annoying flies. Load the trowel with tile adhesive, but don't overload it; think "generous scoop," not "dump truck." Hold it at that magic 30-degree angle, blade flat against the wall or floor.

Now the fun part: spread in smooth, even strokes, keeping them parallel like soldiers in formation. The square notches will leave those signature ridges-resist the urge to go back and "fix" them. I once ruined a section by overworking the adhesive, turning neat lines into a lumpy mess.

When buttering tiles (yes, that's the real term), flip the trowel and use the flat side to spread a thin layer on the back. Press the tile into place with a gentle twist-you'll feel those ridges collapse, locking it in. Clean excess adhesive with the edge before it dries, unless you want to chisel it off later (spoiler: you don't).

Practice on a scrap piece first. My third try on a plywood board finally clicked, and by the time I tackled the bathroom wall, those square notches and I were old friends.
