How To Wear in A Plastering Trowel

Wearing in a plastering trowel-whether it's new or just feeling stiff-takes patience, but it's worth it for that buttery-smooth glide. Start by using it on "practice plaster" first-leftover mix from a job, or a batch you make specifically for breaking in. Spread the plaster thickly on a rough surface (like a cinder block) and work the trowel back and forth, pressing firmly enough to flex the blade but not so hard that you bend it.

Focus on the edge: angle the trowel so the edge scrapes lightly against the plaster, which smooths out any micro-burrs left from manufacturing. This "sharpens" the edge in a gentle way, making it better at cutting through plaster without leaving streaks. Every 10 minutes, wipe the blade clean and check how it feels-if it's still catching, spend more time on the rough patches.

For trowels that have been sitting unused (and gotten stiff), repeat the process but add a step: heat the blade with a hair dryer for a minute to warm the metal, which helps loosen up any residual stiffness. Wearing in a trowel isn't about rushing-it's about building a relationship with the tool. After a few hours of work, you'll know exactly how much pressure to apply, and the trowel will start to "read" your movements, making every stroke feel effortless.
