What Is The Difference Between V And Square-notch Trowel?

V-notch and square-notch trowels are like two siblings with different personalities-same job, totally different approaches. I learned this when tiling my porch, where I switched mid-project and instantly saw the contrast.

V-notches are the subtle ones. Their triangular ridges leave less adhesive, making them perfect for small, lightweight tiles like mosaics or glass. Last month, I used a 1/8-inch V-notch on my bathroom niche tiles. The adhesive spread in tidy little peaks that collapsed gently, no messy oozing. They're also great for uneven surfaces, where excess goop would pool-those V's distribute just enough to fill gaps without overdoing it.

Square notches? They're the bold siblings, with straight edges that leave taller, wider ridges. More adhesive means more grip, which is why pros reach for them for large, heavy tiles like 18x18-inch stone slabs. I used a 1/2-inch square notch on my porch's travertine tiles, and those babies haven't budged through rain and snow.

The key difference? Control. V-notches are for precision, square for power. Use a V on big tiles, and you'll end up with loose ones; use a square on mosaics, and you'll drown them in adhesive. After my porch experiment, I keep both in my toolbox-because sometimes you need a whisper, sometimes a shout.
