The "most efficient" notch depends on what you're doing-but if we had to crown a workhorse, it's the square notch trowel. Here's why: square notches (those with straight, 90-degree edges) are like the Swiss Army knife of notched trowels, balancing adhesive coverage, speed, and versatility across most tiling jobs.
Square notches create sturdy, uniform ridges of adhesive that hold their shape well, even with heavier tiles. They distribute adhesive more evenly than V notches (which can collapse too quickly) and more efficiently than U notches (which often leave excess). This means fewer gaps under tiles and less cleanup-two huge time-savers.
That said, efficiency is about matching the notch to the task:
V notches (sharp, triangular) are efficient for small tiles or thin adhesives, as they apply less material without waste.
U notches (rounded) are great for uneven surfaces, as their deeper, wider ridges ensure better coverage.
But for most standard jobs-think mid-sized ceramic tiles in a bathroom or kitchen-the square notch trowel is the efficiency champ. It gets the job done quickly, with minimal mess, and works across a range of tile sizes and adhesives. When in doubt, square notch is the way to go.
