How to Clean a Plastering Trowel?

On the busy construction sites, plastering trowels come into "close contact" with various mortars and materials every day. After use, timely and proper cleaning is of vital importance. This not only concerns the service life of the trowel but also affects the quality of subsequent construction.

When the plastering work of the day is finished, the first thing to do is to remove the large chunks of residual mortar on the surface of the trowel.

Operators can gently tap the trowel to make the loose mortar fall off, taking care to avoid using excessive force that may damage the blade. Subsequently, prepare a basin of warm water and add an appropriate amount of detergent or professional cleaner, and soak the trowel in the water for a while.

The warm water helps to soften the dried mortar, and the cleaner can effectively break down oil stains and impurities.

For the mortar that adheres more firmly, a soft-bristled brush can be selected and gently scrubbed along the texture of the trowel.

For example, when dealing with the striped residual mortar on the blade surface of the trowel, scrubbing along the stripe direction can efficiently remove the dirt without scratching the surface of the trowel. If you encounter some hard-to-remove stains, you might as well try wiping them with an old rag dipped in a small amount of white vinegar. The acidity of the white vinegar can dissolve some stubborn stains and make the trowel shiny again.

After cleaning, it is essential to rinse the trowel thoroughly with clean water to ensure that there is no cleaner residue left to avoid corroding the material of the trowel. Then dry it with a clean towel or let it air dry in a well-ventilated place.

For carbon steel trowels, after drying, a thin layer of anti-rust oil can be applied to prevent rust and extend the service life.

Although stainless steel trowels have good corrosion resistance, their daily maintenance cannot be ignored. Regular wiping to keep them shiny can keep them in the best working condition.

All in all, mastering the correct cleaning method for trowels can enable this crucial tool to continuously perform excellent functions in each construction, laying the foundation for creating solid and beautiful architectural works.
