How To Make A Plastering Trowel

Making a plastering trowel is a mix of metalwork and craftsmanship-definitely a project for DIY enthusiasts with some tools under their belt. Start with the blade: you'll need a sheet of high-carbon steel (16 to 18 gauge) cut to your desired size (10 to 12 inches is standard). Use a metal shear or plasma cutter to shape it into a rectangle, then file the edges smooth to avoid sharp burrs.

Next, heat the blade gently with a torch-this makes it easier to bend. Clamp it to a workbench and use a hammer to create a slight curve along the length (this helps with spreading plaster). Let it cool, then temper it by heating it until it's cherry red, then quenching it in oil. This hardens the steel, making it rigid but flexible.

For the handle, carve a piece of hardwood (oak or ash works well) into a comfortable grip, or repurpose an old tool handle. Drill a hole through the handle and the base of the blade, then secure them with a stainless steel rivet or bolt. Weld the joint for extra strength if you have a welder.

Finally, sharpen the edge with a grindstone, taking care to keep it even. Test your homemade trowel on a scrap piece of plaster-if it glides smoothly and spreads evenly, you're done! If not, adjust the blade's curve or sharpen the edge a bit more. It might not look as polished as a store-bought trowel, but there's pride in using a tool you built with your own hands.
