What Size Trowel For 600x600 Tile?

If 600x600 tiles were a person, they'd be a linebacker-big, heavy, and needing solid support. That's why choosing the right trowel for them is non-negotiable. Let me share what I learned when I laid 600x600 porcelain tiles in my living room.

First, forget small trowels. 600x600 tiles (that's 24x24 inches, for reference) are heavy-some weigh 5kg or more. They need a thick, even bed of adhesive to stay put, so a 10mm or 12mm notched trowel is your friend. The 12mm was my go-to; it left a 6-8mm layer after pressing the tile down, which felt sturdy enough to handle the weight.

Why not smaller? I tried a 8mm trowel first, and the tiles kept rocking. The adhesive layer was too thin, so any tiny bump in the subfloor made the tile uneven. It was like trying to balance a pizza on a toothpick-doable, but messy.

But size isn't everything. The notch shape matters too. Square notches work better than U-shaped ones for big tiles-they hold more adhesive and release it evenly when pressed. I swapped to a square-notch 12mm trowel, and suddenly, the tiles laid flat as a pancake.

Pro tip: "Back butter" the tiles too. That means spreading a thin layer of adhesive on the back of each tile before laying it. It's extra work, but it ensures every inch sticks-critical for 600x600 tiles, which have more surface area to lift.
