Can A Plastering Trowel Be Used For Cement?

Short answer: yes, but with a big "but". You can use a plastering trowel for small cement jobs, but it's not ideal for big ones. Let me explain- I've used my plastering trowel for cement a few times, and it worked, but there were some headaches. Let's break down when it's okay and when you should get a different tool.

First, small cement jobs are fine. If you're patching a small crack in a sidewalk, or making a few garden stepping stones, a plastering trowel will work. Cement is thicker than plaster, but a sturdy plastering trowel (like stainless steel) can handle it. I used my 12-inch stainless steel trowel to patch a crack in my driveway last year-it took a little extra effort, but it worked. The key here is "small"-you're not trying to pour a whole patio, just a tiny area.

But big cement jobs? Skip the plastering trowel. If you're pouring a sidewalk, a patio, or a foundation, you need a concrete trowel (also called a finishing trowel for concrete). Why? Because cement is heavier and thicker than plaster, and a plastering trowel isn't strong enough for long periods of use. I once tried to smooth a small patio with my plastering trowel-after 30 minutes, my arm was sore, and the blade started to bend a little. Concrete trowels have thicker, stiffer blades that can handle the weight of cement, and they're designed to smooth large areas without bending.

Also, cement can damage your plastering trowel if you're not careful. Cement is more abrasive than plaster, so it can scratch the blade. Scratches on the blade mean it won't smooth plaster as well later. After using my trowel for cement, I had to scrub it extra hard to get rid of the cement residue, and there were a few tiny scratches. It still works for plaster, but it's not as smooth as it used to be.

Another thing: concrete trowels have longer handles. This is a big deal for big jobs-you can stand up straight while smoothing, instead of bending over. Bending over with a plastering trowel for a cement job will kill your back. I learned that the hard way when I was smoothing that patio-my back was sore for days.

So, to sum up: use a plastering trowel for small cement patches or projects. For anything bigger, get a concrete trowel. It'll save you time, pain, and keep your plastering trowel in good shape. Don't be like me-use the right tool for the job.
